There are some great cycle routes around Ullswater with something suitable for a range of abilities and ages.
With access points at Pooley Bridge, Askham and Helton to the fells around High Street with its hundreds of miles of bridleways, mountain biking in this area is awesome.
There is an also an excellent network of family friendly cycle routes and trails that runs throughout the nearby Lowther Estate. Cycle paths snake through the ancient woodland and pastures of Lowther Park, following the stunning contours of the landscape.
The recently opened Threlkeld to Keswick cycle route is a traffic free track along the old railway – a must do!
At the end of your day exploring the area by bike, we have bike and boot wash room and a drying room to dry your wet clothes.
These trails have been created for family enjoyment and are colour-graded in accordance with national cycling standards. There are signposts at every junction, with destinations and length in miles clearly shown.

Alternatively, just a short drive away to Lowther Castle, visitors are able to hire a range of bikes. Explore over 30 km of dedicated trails, largely off road, in the stunning surroundings of Lowther Estate. The trails are mainly traffic free, with a variety of routes to cater for all abilities. Signposting is clear with circular routes taking in ancient woodlands, pastures and the River Lowther trails go to Ullswater and Haweswater.
Stunning Lowther Castle has all the facilities you need to spend the day. For refreshments, the Lowther on the move Citroen Van is located at the Low Sawmill Car Park serving a selection of home made cakes, teas and coffees or you can enjoy a lingering lunch at the Cafe with fresh prepared homemade food. You could combine hire with some time discovering the vast manicured gardens, sculpture gallery and if you have children, The Lost Castle. Please note, Bikes are not allowed in the Castle Gardens
