Local Walks Lake District

Hiking Holidays & Events

Hiking Highs are delighted to offer guests at The Quiet Site a 2 for 1 offer for all guided hiking or bespoke navigation tuition… for a journey tailored for you and your friends.
Our guides are based locally and have expert local knowledge and expertise to take you out onto the fells in all weather conditions, onto any terrain whether a delightful wander into the heart of an Ullswater valley, or tackling the Place Fell screes, or indeed Striding Edge.

A half day (3-4 hours) hiking ideas from The Quiet Site:
1) Wander deep into the Grisedale Valley, from Patterdale, with steep sides of Striding Edge & St Sunday Crag towering above you, be totally immersed in the mountains with virtually no ascent.
2) A short sharp ascent allows you to summit Angle Tarn Pikes, from Patterdale, with 360′ vistas of High street Ridge to the east and the Helvellyn Mountain Range to the west, and Blencathra peeps out to the north.  A chance to spy the Martindale Red Deer from Angle Tarn, our guides know all their hiding spots!
3) In October, a wander into the famous Martindale Valley gives opportunity to hear the bellow of England’s oldest Red Deer herd in full rutting season echoing around the steep sided valleys with local and knowledgeable guides from Hiking Highs. This is the hike aird on the Ch4 series, Extraordinary Escapes, with Sandi Toksvig in June 2023, eposide 2.
COST: £90 for solo hiker, 2nd hiker usually £20, goes for free if you staying at The Quiet Site.
Full day (6-7 hours) hiking ideas from The Quiet Site:
1) Classic Helvellyn Edges includes both Striding and Swirral Edges expertly guided by Hiking Highs.  Helvellyn routes available with the edges also.
2) Scafell Pike via The Corridor Route, a real journey to the top of England, without the stress of navigating – NOTE: 1 Hour Car journey into Borrowdale, south of Keswick.
3) St Sunday Crag or High Street, from Patterdale, are also lesser walked and favourites with HIking Highs guides, as both are steeped in History and easily achievable and can be extended to suit the hiking party… our guides know every sheep trod to take you off the beaten track to explore, if the day allows.
COST: £150 for solo hiker, 2nd hiker usually £20, goes for free if you staying at The Quiet Site.
Navigation Tuition – full day (6-7 hours):
Take your navigation journey to the next level, from absolute beginners who have a total fear of maps & being ‘lost’ (you are never lost… just mislocated!), start to decode the map, to those who wish to safely go exploring off trail, to those who really want to push boundaries and would like to have fun with a contour only map.
COST: £180 for solo navigator, 2nd navigator usually £50, goes for free if you staying at The Quiet Site.

2) 22nd-24th October 2025 – Red Deer Rutting Break

The Famous Autumn Red Deer Rut in the Ullswater and Martindale area of the Lake District is a hidden gem as the bellowing of stags echoes around Martindale and Boredale. Join us with your binoculars to experience this truly magical connection to nature. As featured on Extraordinary Escapes in June 2023 with Sandi Tocksvik.

On our Autumn Red Deer Rutting Special – 2/3 day break, walking the fells above Ullswater. October is the guaranteed month for you to hear the famous Red Deer of the Martindale Valley Rutting and their bellowing echoing around the valleys.

Each day is also bookable as an individual day’s hiking to see and hear the deer.

Then some blurb about your suggested accomodation to keep in tune with nature and the sounds and smells and colours of autumn from your pods / gingerbread houses etc etc …
