As Cumbria bids to become the Adventure Capital of the UK it is time for the Quiet Site to acknowledge that not all things are as quiet as we would like...
Local man Leo Holding knows a thing or two about adventure. His ascent on life started close to here in Appleby climbing under rather than over the bridge. His life has progressed in this slightly alternative fashion ever since! His mountain climbing started here in the lakes. Having learnt his trade he has gone on to star in films about Everest, pioneered BASE jumping, spent millions of pounds of Richard Branson's money making the TV show for Virgin One "Take me to the Edge" and raced Jeremy Clarkson up (and down) the Verdon Gorge for BBC's Top Gear!
It is also no surprise that Sir Chris Bonington, possibly England's most famous mountaineer and adventurer, has made Cumbria his adopted home.
Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or just wanting to get the family adrenalin pumping little, Cumbria has all the answers.
Here are a few suggestions:
Canoe Trail Around Ullswater
Find our where to hire boats, launch, and lunch!
It's not in the dictionary, but if it was, Go Ape would be described as a 'high-wire forest adventure'.
That means giant obstacle courses up in the trees using ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels made of wood, rope and super-strong wire.
The result is spectacular. The Go Ape experience gets the adrenalin pumping, gets people out of their comfort zones and above all it's just great fun.
Family Mountain Biking
The Altura Trial
Whinlatter Forest Park is home to the longest purpose-built mountain bike trail in the Lake District. This new purpose built 7.5km mountain bike route is graded blue (level 2 out of 4 for difficulty). A reasonable level of fitness is required, but it's suitable for families with children from seven years old upwards. You can hire bikes and there are junior skill sessions, bike wash and workshops at Whinlatter. There are longer and more difficult trails nearby.
Via Ferrata & Zip Wires
Steel ladders set into the rock then a zip wire down!
